The LaMed2 Project “Mediterranean coastal lagoons management: interactions between aquaculture and capture fisheries” is a component of a larger project “Strengthening cooperation on fisheries and aquaculture management in the Mediterranean and the Black sea” carried out by the GFCM, and funded by the Directorate General for Fisheries and Aquaculture of the Italian Ministry for Agriculture and Forestry Policies. It started in September 2010 and has a duration of 24 months.
Within the activities of the GFCM-CAQ, LaMed2 was designed and developed to explore the main issues dealing with the interactions between aquaculture and capture fisheries (IACF) in Mediterranean coastal lagoons toward a sustainable management of these environments. A first step in the project is an inventory of Mediterranean coastal lagoons compiled for each GSA, in order to gather the existing information on the site, on its physical, chemical and biological characteristics, and on the human activities carried out in them or in the surroundings area, with particular reference to aquaculture and capture fisheries and the interaction between them and with the environment. The project also aims at providing guidelines and recommendations related to the interaction of capture fisheries and aquaculture towards a sustainable management of coastal lagoons using a systemic approach in the four dimensions of sustainability (environmental, economic, social and governance) within the overall context of Integrated Coastal Zone Management and in an Ecosystem Approach for Aquaculture perspective.
Key words: Mediterranean aquaculture; interactions aquaculture/capture fisheries; coastal lagoon management; GFCM; CAQ; Integrated Coastal Zone Management; GSAs; indicators for sustainability; economic green accounting.
LaMed2 is one of the two components of the larger project “Strengthening cooperation on fisheries and aquaculture management in the Mediterranean and the Black sea”.
LaMed1, the first component of the project, is: "Fisheries laws and regulations in the Mediterranean and the Black Sea".
